Synthesis Post

           Starting college is an exhilarating time full of new experiences and independence. While this time can be exciting, it can also be stressful because this is the time that you will decide what you are going to do for the rest of your life.  For some, the decision is easy. Whether it be a childhood dream or a new found love, these people seem to have their hearts set on one specific occupation. For others, it is not so easy. With a list of nearly 500 majors to choose from, the process can be very intimidating and that is okay. Many people have the idea that going in undecided is a bad idea or a waste of money, but this could not be further from the truth.

Here is a list of benefits to going into college undecided.

1.     You will be able to take more exploratory courses to find what you really love

2.     You will get your general education courses out of the way

3.     Your course load will most likely be easier giving you a good GPA boost

4.     It can actually save money because you will not waste money on classes that go towards a major that you switch out of

Finding a major is not an easy decision. Everyone who chooses a major either has done research on their major and is deeply interested in it, or have been dreaming of the career all their life. We also stressed that you should not feel insecure about having a major because majority of college students are bound to change their majors at least three times (Ramos para 2). Throughout our blog research, we dug into what lengths you need to take to find a major and how hard the process can be. Beyond just finding a major, we discovered that it is also important for you to find out yourself individually before you just jump into a major. This process includes joining organizations, clubs, and taking classes that fall into your brackets of interest. Along with this, it is also important to maintain good networking with colleagues and/or friends. Having a social group that is just as focused and motivated as you keeps you on the right track and can ultimately help you pick the major that is the best for you.

Sometimes undecided students may feel as though decided students are a step ahead of them, but both positions have benefits and experience growth in the process.

Theatre: Scenic Design - Being a Scenic Design major has its many challenges. One big challenge is choosing which kind of design fits you best. Doing the research for this blog has broadened my knowledge of possible design areas to go into. An article that really opened my eyes was from Stage Directions Magazine. I wrote about this article in this post. - No matter what area I decide to go into, I will always be learning new things. I am confident that my degree will give the basic knowledge I need for my field. I feel this is the same for all majors/career paths. A post I wrote relates to this topic.

Horticulture: Organic Food Production - To be in horticulture major, each field involves various study of skills and knowledge so is hard to decide a focus. - It’s important to know what do people do in this field and how could learning horticulture impact our life. I wrote more about that in this post.

Engineering: Mechanical - First challenge of going into engineering is choosing engineering, is picking which field to go into. In my post, Choosing from the wide variety of engineering disciplines, I discussed how to begin the process. - In my post, Thinking of being an engineer?, I discussed the importance of taking steps to learn more about your field of choice and how to go about getting hands-on experience.

Buttercup flower by Lucy Liu

    In this week I read an article about 10 weird and truly terrifying plants in our world. One of them extremely interested me is the buttercup.

   In the article it said that buttercup is a kind of flower that is really danger to not only human but animals. To me, this plants is like the wild flowers and we can see them anywhere in the spring. I never thought about to connect this small, bright, yellow and cute plants to anything that would damage people. Sometimes people even use buttercup as slang to describe young girls who are cute and sweet. However, what I learned from this source is that, buttercups have virulence. It can causes poisoning by just teaching of the plants, and also, if people or animals eat this kind of plant by accident, it would have serious damage of the bodies. The gastrointestinal toxicity may result in a painful death resulting from organ and nervous systems. I think the buttercups are more danger than other toxic plants because we can get hurt by both touching them and tasting them, also at the same time, this is kind of wild flowers that often appears in gardens and even lawns beside the road, so they have a wide distribution all around the world and really hard to distinguish with other kinds of wild flowers. The children who play outside would easily see the buttercups and their colorful appearance might give the kids the rise to touch them, and if they do so, it will cause serious problems.

     In conclusion, the thing that looks beautiful outside is not always as good inside them. We should not touch or taste any wild plants and fruits before we know what they are, the inconspicuous plants like buttercups might be the big killer of human.
