Many people
feel that going in undecided is a bad idea. They have heard that it’s a waste
of time or money, but what they haven’t heard is that sometimes, it is the best
option. I recently had a friend who went through the whole first semester of
freshman year as an engineering major. She was miserable throughout her classes
and ultimately knew she needed to change her major. She finally went to her councilor and
undeclared her major, now putting her as no preference. When she did, she said
that it made her life one hundred times better. While this may have been an exaggeration,
she now feels that she is much more confident in her studies. There is no
longer any worry that all of the very difficult classes will be a waste. When I
asked her why she choose engineering in the first place, she responded by saying,
“I think I felt too pressured to pick a major before and it wasn’t something I
really actually wanted to do. Now I just want to wait and find something that I
want to do.” Her story is a prime example of why sometimes going in undecided is
the best option. Even though it may seem like an unstable option, it may lead
to the confidence that one needs in their studies and will ultimately lead to
finding the perfect major.
This is very important. I've had friends that are juniors that have changed their major at least 4 times. It can be tricky deciding on what you want to do for the rest of your life as soon as you graduate high school. I feel as though you shouldn't feel bad about major changes either. Thats what you're in college for.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that you agree. Choosing a college major can be very difficult and so its good to know that it is okay if you don't know what you want to do or feel that the path you chose may not be right.
