So maybe you
feel that going into college undecided is the right fit for you, but now the
only problem is that you have to tell your parents. Parents can often be very
close-minded to the idea of not knowing your major. In some cases, this can
happen when parents have a set career path for their child, despite what the
student may think. Whether it be a family legacy or a personal dream, some
parents have one goal for their child that they can’t let go of. This can make
it very difficult for the student to branch off and make the decisions that
will be most beneficial to their life. In other cases, parents just don’t
recognize the benefits that going in undecided actually has. They think that it
is a waste of money, when, in actuality, that is very untrue. Going in undecided
saves you from spending money on classes that you may not need if you end up
switching your major. Parents may also worry that you will be just aimlessly
taking classes, not even thinking about a major. While this could be true for
some, motivated students will work hard to find courses that bring excitement
to their studies. Additionally, with the help of academic advisors, there are
many people that can help steer a student in the direction of finding something he/ she loves. Ultimately, it may be difficult to tell your parents that you don’t
have a major, but with just a little bit of explanation, you should be able to
ease them into having confidence in the situation.
I really like this post because it's so relatable and a lot of students understand the trouble you have to go through to convince their parents that they aren't wasting time at college.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment! I'm glad that you could relate to the struggle that many students go through when explaining the college experience to their parents
