“Plain and simple, I just like to create this illusion for
people.” These are the first words we hear from scenic charge artist, Jason
Edwards, in a video interview from the American Theatre Wing. This video struck
interest in me because being a charge artist is something I’m looking into for
a possible career choice. I’ve actually found many of the videos from the American
Theatre Wing’s YouTube channel quite informative. This one in particular gives
a look into what a charge artist does. A charge artist’s job is to go beyond
just building the set. They must paint and draw on the set to achieve what the
designer wants. This involves much practice in painting and drawing. The
interview brings out the needed skill of paint mixing being a vital component
to a charge artist’s job. All of this goes into creating a space actors and the
audience can get lost in. It amazes me the talent people hold.
