Stage Directions (a
technical theatre based magazine) published an article about the transition
from college into the work force. They spoke with young professionals in the
tech theatre field to see what advice they give to those upcoming. In the first
part of the article, Anne Militello, the head of the lighting design program at
CalArts, talks about how young artists tend to think they will rise to the top
once they enter the business. She says, “... they graduate and they’re excited, they’re motivated, they’re ready to
take on the world and win their first Tony award and that’s a great attitude to
have but it’s a big shock also to realize that likely is not the path things
will take. The smart ones all of a sudden look in the mirror and realize how
much they really don’t yet know.” I really
appreciate this because it is very easy to think that once I graduate I’ll immediately
become the next big scenic designer. I have to realize, that that’s 4+ years
away (depending if I go to graduate school), and by that time I might not even
want to go into theatrical design specifically. In that time, I could decide that I want to
go into the Themed Entertainment industry and design like theme parks,
live experiences, immersive experiences, etc. There are so many different places
a degree in technical theatre can take a person, I’m excited to see where I’ll
go.
