If you are thinking about majoring in engineering, it is
important to do some research. First, you need to know what discipline you want
to go into. I discussed this more in depth in a previous blog post here.
In the article linked below, it mentions the importance of talking to a
professional engineer to see what their job is like. This is important as it'll
give you a more realistic idea as to what a day in the life of an engineer is
like. If you live in south east Michigan, it could be fairy easy to find an
engineer to talk to as they are virtually all over. However, for those not
fortunate to have as easy access to engineers, there are still other ways to go
about finding some to talk to. For example, here at Michigan State we have many
different engineering companies/firms coming to the school all the time to talk
to current students about internship possibilities. These events are often
announced on the college of engineering's Twitter and Facebook pages. The
professor for the Introduction to Engineering Design classes, Dr. Morgan, has
all of this information as well and is available during her office hours. These
kind of events are great not only for learning about the engineering profession
but also possible future internships/careers. If nothing else, be sure to
follow the news from the engineering college as there is almost always stuff
going on to help you learn more about a future in engineering.
