“Theatre isn’t a real major”, “You’ll never go anywhere with
that major”, “What a waste of time and money”, “What do you plan to do with
that”. These are all very familiar words to theatre majors. We here talk like
this all of the time from so many people. Many people think it is a bad decision to go into the theatrical arts. I’m here
to tell those people, THEY ARE WRONG! Arts Education is such a fundamental part
of each person’s education. Theatre specifically, teaches time management
skills, social skills, problem solving skills, and life skills.
Being a technical theatre student, I am learning things from almost every area of study/vocation. Being a scenic designer I have to study art, history, literature, even a little physics and engineering. I learn incredibly valuable research skills too. As a technician (stage hand) and carpenter, I gain skills in woodworking, carpentry, drafting, rigging, electrical work, and even plumbing and welding. I learn skills in pretty much every job you could think of.
When people say to me negative things like how “theatre is a
waste of a major”, I immediately tell them, “No it is absolutely not”. A
theatre major is such an incredibly versatile major. It is so hard for people to accept that. I have learned so many
valuable skills that many lack, such as: I can speak publicly, I can present information
to a group of people, and I can even collaborate with a group of people. On top
of all of this, I am also doing what I love, something so many don’t end up
doing. I honestly believe if someone wants an education where they want to
learn a little bit of everything, a theatre major is the major to have.
I definitely agree with you! Theater is a great major, it is always important to follow your own interests no matter what anyone has to say about it. What type of job are you planning on pursing in this field?
