Prompt #7 Pros and Cons of Being Undecided by: Bridget Spagnuolo

The idea of going into college as a no preference major is often a very controversial topic. People tend to argue whether it is or is not a good plan. An article created by US News discusses just that: the pros and cons of going in undecided. One benefit they discuss is that, given that general courses are often easier, it can help start freshman off with a good grade point average. This is especially true in highly competitive fields where GPA can make or break your chances of getting into a master’s program or even getting a job. The article continues to add to the benefits by stating that you shouldn’t “paint yourself into a corner if there is no compelling reason to do so,” proving that sometimes it’s good to keep options open.
Although there are many pros to being undecided, there are also many cons. The article starts by explaining how deciding a major can give insight into what classes to take. This gives you the opportunity to not only get required credits, but also get a feel for what your indicated field is like. They continue to state the cons by mentioning that “applying to college with a specific major in mind may also qualify you for additional forms of financial support,” which can be a big factor when going into college. In summary, there are both pros and cons to being to being undecided, so you’ll have to figure out which side is right for you.

  1. I thought it was good that you put the benefits of going into college undecided. Because I always thought going into college undecided was a bad thing and you could end up wasting money. I feel like this will show someone they shouldnt rush into a major because they could end up not really liking it and wasting there time and money just because they didn't do much research on what it takes.
