Prompted Post #2 Engineering Ethics by Nick Abel

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers has their own code of ethics of which they require all their members to abide by. The code of ethics has three fundamental principles. Engineers uphold and advance the integrity, honor, and dignity of the engineering profession by using their knowledge and skill for the enhancement of human welfare, being honest and impartial, and serving with fidelity their clients and the public, and striving to increase the competence and prestige of the engineering profession. Many of the statements in the ASME code of ethics corresponds to my own code of ethics as well. For example, the first statement about how engineers use their knowledge and skill for the enhancement of human welfare, I really agree with. I believe that skills are best used to help other people and to make their lives easier. It can be a great feeling to see something you did help someone else feel better and can be motivational to continue to do great things. Engineering can be very fulfilling, especially if you follow the code of ethics so your conscious doesn't get in your way.
