Prompted Post #6 Psychology and Music by Kimira Harp
Although I am an undecided student, I have been considering Psychology as a major, and I am VERY passionate about music. If you have been following up with the last few posts that I've posted, I'm sure you're getting closer to finding your dreams as well. In '"Boundaries and thresholds": Conceptual models of the musical mind in the history of music psychology', Kim Youn argues "Studies of both institutionalized as independent academic disciplines, both aspiring to be scientific. What might be more significant however, than this shared aspiration is the change in the conception of the human mind itself." I happen to agree with this argument very much so. Although, they are both scientific, the fact that music has the "power" or ability to influence or shape a human's conception is pretty potent. This can be either intoxicating or elating, depending on the choice of music. Our moods and emotions can be influenced based on the music we allow ourselves to listen to. So, it is best to be aware of the lyrics and not just like a song because of its beat. The phrase "You are what you eat" is true, and if you feed your mind trash...well you know the rest. Replenish your mind!
