Organic Foods by Lucy Liu

Nowadays, people want to be healthy so they are trying to have more fruit, vegetables, whole grains and good proteins everyday to build their body stronger. There are many organic food out there, and we all know that the price for that is much higher than the regular ones. So what is making the organic food different from the non-organic food?
Last Tuesday I went to the MSU student organic farm for a field trip and learned a lot from the instructions they gave out. Organic foods are the foods produced by methods that comply with the standards of organic farming. We always think that organic farms produce fruit and vegetables without using pesticide and fertilizer, but this is definitely not true. Organic farming grows plants by using certain type of the pesticides which could be break down in the nature and not harmful for human, at the same time, the fertilizers they have is not the one that chemosynthetic. Instead of those, they use natural fertilizers made with the fermentation of animal waste. There are also some chickens and pigs that rises in the farm, so the resources cyclic utilization could be maximized. In order to get enough nutritions, the farmers would plant the plants from different family to the one spot each year, because same family’s plants are more likely to have similar diseases and nutritional requirement. Planting them in the various area of the farm could avoid the lack of nutrient element in the field. That’s why the organic food could have same or even better taste and nutrient content by not using much fertilizers and pesticides.

  1. I think this is interesting because it taught me a lot I didn't know about the organic food and how it's grown. There are certain things you could explain a little better, like what chemosynthetic is. You could also explain how they could lower the prices of these products. Overall, it's a good and interesting post that gives a lot of new information I've never known before.
