Choosing from the Wide Variety of Engineering Disciplines by Nick Abel

If you choose to go into the engineering field, they sheer volume of disciplines can be quite overwhelming. If you are unsure of what part of engineering you're interested in pursuing, it's important to take at least a brief look at all of them. Doing a simple Google search of what each field is mainly focused on can turn up some very informative results. When you start to narrow down your possibilities, it may be a good idea to look into what kind of courses are needed to be taken at your college of choice to get a feel for how difficult it may be to obtain a degree in your desired discipline.  Almost all engineering fields require you to take very challenging math classes as most of engineering is solving problems using math and physics. If either of these is not a very good subject for you, that's okay because many people go into the engineering field starting off with base-level math classes and work their way up from there. What's important is that you stay determined to get better at those subjects, take those extra classes in the summer, visit with the professor or the TA outside of class, get some help from a tutor. All these things will show the college that even though you may not be great at these subjects from the beginning, you are determined to become better and overcome your obstacles. And that's a great thing for employers to look at too. Engineering is all about solving problems the best, most efficient way possible given a certain amount of resources, and overcoming obstacles rather they are mental obstacles or learning obstacles, how you go about overcoming them is what matters. Most importantly, don't be afraid to try new things. Sign up for the classes that you think best fit your plan for the future, join clubs, and go to the career fairs. Engineering can get very overwhelming at times but it's how you persevere through it that matters.
