Life of a Scenic Designer by Brandon Barker

I am studying scenic design here at MSU. I have a deep passion for the career I’ve chosen. I love the story the set can tell. The set helps the actors/actresses to further develop their character, and get into the mind of the person they’re playing. I found a video by the American Theatre Wing on being a scenic designer in the theatre world. I learned about two designer’s, and how their different educational backgrounds make for different design processes. One designer has a background in architecture which makes her want to use more real materials, rather than use a paint technique to mimic a material. I appreciated how the video went back and forth between the two designers and gradually built upon their processes sequentially. I would’ve had a different experience with the video had they showed one interview at a time, and not mixed the two together. I really enjoyed this video. I liked seeing actual work from the two designers, and how they went about those designs. I watch videos like these and can’t help but feel totally content being a scenic designer.
