Looking for things that suit your interest, trying
different programs, and interacting with people in the fields
that you are interested in. Those are all components that can help you on the
journey of both finding yourself and your potential. Being young and open
minded about your potential career gives you the space to, first, find who you
are. Imagine going into an ice cream shop for the first time and being
asked "What would you like?". It would be quite hard to
answer this without knowing what you like. If you like chocolate you
would most likely pick that or something similar but if your open to
all the flavors you would probably have do some deeper self-investigating.
"What flavors do I like the least?" "Which ones will make me the
most happy?" Oddly enough, these questions can relate to how you
will pick your career and major. Even though picking an ice cream maybe a
little easier than figuring out what you want to do with the rest of your life,
they both come back to the important fact that you must know yourself, before
you can make almost any decision in life.
Of course, finding
yourself is not the easiest task, people go decades without knowing who they
truly are as a person. Life itself is an overwhelming concept
but to find out who you truly are as a person, will strengthen you
getting through it. People who jump into careers without knowing
what they truly like most often end up hating the career field they are
in. So since finding yourself is broad concept, let's start with a
component that is not as hard to wrap your brain around, finding what you
like.
The activities you do on a daily basis and the things that you
enjoy to do can reflect the career you would most likely like to pursue.
One interesting concept given in The Muse: Do
What You Love article is eliminating money from figuring out
what your passion is and what you would love to do. If it came down to it would
you really choose money over your happiness? Another thing to know is, when you
start pursuing different routes and exploring what you do like, if you begin to
not like it, do not give up so easily if you know it is your true
purpose to be there, stick with it! But if not, then explore your B and C
options. Find groups of friends that like the same activities you do or have
similar career interest. Sometimes (most of the time) surrounding yourself by
other like minded individuals will help you when making
different life decisions about your potential career and can be useful when to
you later in life when entering your field and trying to find jobs.
Lastly, always leave your doors open for growth and space, no one is
perfect and it takes time to master whatever field you decide to go into, do
not let being in the beginning stages of the fight stop you from
winning the battle. Have faith in yourself, your journey, and keep
your happiness along the way. Success is not an easy road but it is
one worth the obstacles.
