Prompted Post #8 by Brandon Barker

Most theatre companies have a scene shop where the set gets built and painted. I have had much experience working in a scene shop. I worked in a scene shop all throughout high school and learned so much. I knew that when I came to college I would start working in the Department of Theatre’s scene shop too. Now that I’m taking college level technical theatre classes, I’m learning a lot of new things in class, but there’s no comparison to hands-on learning. I'm a scene shop employee so I get to do hands-on work every week. One can read a book on painting techniques, but you don’t really learn that technique unless you practice it. One day in class we did talk about different painting techniques, and it was hard to learn it until I practiced it in the scene shop. I learn so much more working in the scene shop than in class. This shows me that hands on work is a necessity in technical theatre careers. It would be very hard for a scenic designer to design if he didn’t know how to paint. I love working in the scene shop and all the educational benefits that come with it.
